A Heartwarming Day with Orangutans
Hello, nature lovers! Ava and Theo here, still beaming from our visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah, Malaysia. Nestled in the lush Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, this sanctuary is a haven for orphaned and injured orangutans. Spending a day with these incredible creatures was pure magic—here’s our story.
Arrival and First Impressions
We arrived at Sepilok after a short flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan. The center’s wooden walkways and towering trees instantly set a serene vibe. The staff welcomed us with warm smiles and a briefing about the orangutans’ rehabilitation process. Knowing these animals were being prepared for life in the wild tugged at our heartstrings.
Watching the Feeding Session
The highlight was the morning feeding session. We stood on the viewing platform as orangutans swung through the trees to a wooden platform laden with bananas and sugarcane. Their playful antics—dangling upside down while munching—had us giggling like kids. Ava snapped photos, while Theo marveled at their human-like expressions. A mother orangutan cradling her baby was the sweetest moment.
Exploring the Nursery
We also visited the outdoor nursery, where younger orangutans learn to climb and socialize. Watching them tumble and play was both hilarious and heartwarming. The center’s commitment to conservation inspired us, and we learned how palm oil plantations threaten their habitat. It’s a reminder to shop sustainably!
Foodie Break
After exploring, we grabbed lunch at the nearby Banana Café. The nasi lemak, with its creamy coconut rice and spicy sambal, was a revelation. We paired it with fresh mango juice, soaking in the jungle views. The café’s laid-back vibe was perfect for reflecting on the day.
