Wild Wonders in Bavarian Forest National Park
Hallo, nature enthusiasts! Ava and Theo here, fresh from an epic adventure in Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany’s oldest national park. Tucked along the Czech border, this sprawling wilderness of ancient trees and rugged trails was a nature lover’s paradise. Here’s our story of hikes, wildlife, and hearty German eats.
Arriving in the Wilderness
We drove from Munich, the forest’s dense canopy welcoming us as we entered the park. The visitor center at Lusen was our first stop, where interactive exhibits taught us about the park’s ‘let nature be nature’ philosophy. Armed with a trail map and a sense of adventure, we set off, ready to explore.
Hiking the Rachelsee Trail
We chose the Rachelsee Trail, a 12km loop to a serene lake. The path wound through towering firs and mossy boulders, with the air thick with pine scent. Theo, our trailblazer, spotted a red deer in the distance, while Ava marveled at the wildflowers. The lake itself was a mirror, reflecting snow-capped peaks. We sat on a bench, sharing a thermos of hot chocolate, feeling utterly at peace.
Wildlife Encounters
The park’s wildlife enclosure was a highlight. We saw lynx prowling gracefully and wolves lounging in the shade. The rangers shared stories of rewilding efforts, which left us inspired. A treetop walkway offered panoramic views, and we spotted a black stork soaring above—a rare treat! The park’s untouched beauty reminded us how precious these wild spaces are.
Foodie Moments
After hiking, we stopped at a nearby gasthaus for lunch. The pretzels, warm and chewy, paired perfectly with creamy obatzda cheese. Theo raved about the sauerbraten, a tangy beef dish, while Ava loved the apple strudel with vanilla sauce. We toasted with local weissbier, soaking in the cozy alpine vibe.
Why We Loved It
